Dog Whispering?

I've had occasion from time to time to tune-in to "The Dog Whisperer" on the National Geographic Channel. While I think the show does share some strong messages about dog psychology (and human psychology in relation to dogs), I sometimes find the shows to be a bit frustrating. Cesar, the host, does ...

Whisperer's tricks also work on humans

"Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan is best known for turning unruly pooches into canine good citizens, but today he'll be practicing his magic on humans.Millan will lead about 850 people in the sold-out Clarkston High School auditorium, teaching them how to be better pack leaders."I focus on training the human so he knows he can fulfill the dog," Millan said, "My goal is to create balance (in the dog) so then people can train their dogs."Millan says balance means meeting a dog's needs so behavioral problems don't occur. His television program "Dog Whisperer" showcases real-world examples of Millan helping people turn bad dogs into well-behaved dogs.Millan's ability to communicate with and rehabilitate even the most fiendish and foul-mannered Fidos has captured a growing national television audience and spurred a book, how-to videos, seminars, and even a training collar.

Trainer puts dogs in their place

Smart about pets: She says owners are responsible for most of their animals' behavior problems

Tania Rogers' Bernese mountain dog, Zach, is featured on the box of Western Family large dog biscuits. (Sherry Petit/Close-Up Correspondent ) All the dogs are in position. A Siberian husky, yellow Lab and brown-miniature dachshund - all puppies - sit and listen intently for further instruction while a pit bull pup sniffs the floor, rolls under chairs and licks anything within reach at Layton's PetSmart.

Tania Rogers, a pet-training specialist, chooses Dan and Rob Sears' husky pup, Gage, to move from the sit to the down position. She cups a treat in her hand, brings it to the floor and awards it to Gage when the husky gets down on all fours. "Rogers is truly a dog whisperer," says Cindy Jensen, owner of the miniature dachshund named Emi-Lu. After hearing about Rogers, Jensen drove from Eden during the winter just to see the trainer.

"She has this way with animals," Jensen says. Rogers' way with animals keeps her busy. She juggles training owners and their dogs, managing her pet's modeling career and saving the lives of baby birds. She's always loved dogs and other animals.
