Dog Days

Sometimes I really can't be bothered making my breakfast. I go straight for the coffee and computer. This is that morning.

Parker woke me at 5:45 wanting to go out. It's a terrible habit she's developed and one I'd love to break her of. I need the Dog Whisperer. She's gotten real barky and demanding and she never used to do this. 5:45am is just downright unacceptable. It's like having an infant. And not in a good way. infant. And not in a good way.

Animal behavior: Going to the dogs

At some point during President Bush's first term, it was reported that the president liked to relax by taking his dog, Spot, out to the South Lawn of the White House. The Leader of the Free World would take a tennis racket with him and whack balls across the lawn for Spot to retrieve.

I read that and thought, "Cool." The president has figured out how to avoid STBS: slobbery tennis ball syndrome. I thought, "President Bush is a genius," which is an odd sentence to write, but the man had solved one of life's enduring problems.

Katherine "KT" Spencer is not loyal to "The Dog Whisperer." The TV show, she says, contains too many commercials, which "get on my nerves." But those who know the Lakeland girl describe her much as others describe Cesar Millan, the uncannily effective dog trainer featured on the National Geographic Channel program. KT's obedience-class teacher calls her "a natural," saying the 12-year-old understands that a dog whisperer must first be a dog listener.

"You have to learn to read your dog, and that's (a) thing KT is good at," says Kitty Thompson, a member of the Imperial Polk Obedience Club in Lakeland. "She's good at reading (her dog) Luke's moods, and dogs are like people -- they have good days and bad days."
